Meet Our Team
Dr. Gwen Flanagan
Gwen is Newcastle born and bred, growing up in Cooks Hill before graduating in dentistry at Sydney University in 1987. Gwen brings years of experience, gained from practicing dentistry in Public Hospitals and Private Practice in Sydney and also working overseas in the United Kingdom (British) dental system. Gwen worked in Cobar, NSW in her own dental practice for several years before returning to her home town of Newcastle. She has spent the balance of her dental career in our great city, where she currently provides her years of experience to her patients in her own practice in Adamstown.
Working overseas was instrumental in expanding her knowledge base and adding to her repertoire of skills also giving her greater appreciation of the great dental system and the high quality of materials available to Australians. Remote dentistry in Cobar has added much to Gwen’s dental knowledge to benefit her patients.
Gwen’s passion is to provide excellent dentistry to her patients. In keeping with this she understands the benefit of attending regular meetings and courses to keep up to date with the advancing technologies and methods in her chosen field.
Gwen enjoys all aspects of dentistry and this is evidenced by her friendly, caring and thorough manner. She enjoys working with adults and children alike. Her adult patients appreciate her caring, confident dentistry and value her clear explanations of treatment plans, while her younger patients are relaxed by her calming, friendly approach.
Shelly - Hygienist
Hi my name is Shelly and I am a dental hygienist at Gwen Flanagan Dental. Born and raised in Newcastle, I entered the dental industry as an assistant. In this time my passion for oral health grew and in 2015 I furthered my career by graduating from Newcastle University with a Bachelor of Oral Health.
I have been working with Gwen and her team since September 2016. My aim is to provide optimum oral health and well-being to my patients. Nothing is more beautiful than to see a person smile and knowing you are the reason behind it. It has been a pleasure working alongside Gwen and her team. I am looking forward to extending my knowledge and experience here.
In my spare time I like to stay fit training in crossfit and weight lifting, as well as spending time with my family and friends.
Joanne - Receptionist
HI my name is Joanne and I recently joined Gwen’s practice as a part time receptionist after having time off to have my family which consists of two "loud" young boys.
I bring with me over 25 years’ experience in the dental industry. My career began as a shy seventeen year old teenager in my home town of Kurri Kurri were my passion for the Dental field bloomed After moving to Newcastle and working in general dentistry for several years I branched off into the more specialized area of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. The past 13 years I have focused on reception and feel this is where my true talents shine.
I first met Gwen in 1999 when we both volunteered at a Dental Clinic in a small village in Nepal, after sharing many wonderful adventures on this trip I am really excited to be once again working alongside Gwen.
Kimberley - Receptionist
Hi my name is Kimberley I have recently started working at Gwen Flanagan’s dental surgery. I grew up in the little country town of Bulahdelah on a farm. I have been working as a dental assistant sinceDecember 2012. I decided in year 10 I would like to do it as work experience and from doing this I was offered at position at Gloucester Dental Surgery.
I have completed my Certificate III in dental assisting and Certificate IV in Oral health. When I am not working I spend my time at home in Bulahdelah on the farm riding horses and spending time with my pets, I have been riding horses from a very young age. Some weekends I go to different places around NSW to compete in horse events. I also enjoy traveling and hope to do more traveling overseas in the future.
I love my new position here at Gwen’s because the other staff members are lovely. We are a happy, friendly team here and we always take the best care of our patients. Gwen is lovely to work for, which makes work a very happy place to work in. I enjoy coming to work and I’m always keen to learn more from her and the team.
